Lighting Modifiers

Here is how this works in practice. We give full lighting modifier packages covering softboxes, diffusion materials in each grade, scrims, grid cloths, bounce surfaces, flags and the textiles for large overhead butterfly systems. Our team sources these extras from local suppliers, sets up delivery alongside your lighting fixtures, and organises everything in grip cases for fast access on set. We supply reflectors from shiny boards to beadboard and foam core. The black duvetyn and solids that create the negative fill cinematographers depend on for contrast.

Here is the short of it. Malta's modifier inventory covers standard work. But for large overhead rigs or wide frame sets we supplement stock from Sicily. The Italian mainland, or from UK suppliers, with gear moving carnet-free within the EU and arriving by sea or air. We keep extra diffusion grades and alternatives on hand. This the short travel times between locations make practical mid-shoot.

Here is the breakdown. Modifiers do much of the heavy lifting on Maltese shoots because the natural light is so strong. With roughly 300 days of sunshine a year and a hard central-Mediterranean key bouncing off honey-coloured globigerina limestone, large diffusion frames and overhead silks are key for controlling exteriors, and bounce is invaluable for filling shadow on coastal scenes at Marsaxlokk or the Blue Grotto. Indoors, the stone interiors of Knights-era palaces in Valletta and the Three Cities reflect light in their own way, and softboxes and negative fill shape the mood.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Summer wind on exposed sites such as the Dingli Cliffs makes secure rigging of large frames a safety priority. Heat, sea salt and limestone dust wear textiles, so we keep materials closely. On heritage interiors, modifier placement is set up with Heritage Malta, and English as an official language alongside Maltese keeps lighting plans and crew planning clear for global shoots.
