Here is how this works in practice. We source HMI and tungsten lighting fixtures in the wattages and configurations your gaffer specifies, from compact units to large 18K HMIs for exterior fill and big interior spaces. Our team draws on local rental inventory for ARRI M-series, K5600 and tungsten Fresnels, builds packages complete with ballasts, grip and power distribution, and sets up power packs sizing for big HMI loads.

Here is the short of it. Malta's lighting pool covers most standard work. But for large multi-fixture rigs or pro units we supplement stock from Sicily. The Italian mainland, or from UK suppliers, with gear moving carnet-free within the EU and arriving by sea or air. Mains power on the islands is 230V/50Hz on UK-style three-pin plugs, a legacy of British rule. This simplifies matters for UK crews and feeds into our distribution planning. Each fixture and ballast is tested before delivery, spare lamps are kept on hand, and we can give skilled Maltese gaffers and electricians who know the local power systems.

Here is the breakdown. Malta gives lighting teams two very different jobs. Outdoors, the islands enjoy roughly 300 days of sunshine and a hard Mediterranean key, so HMIs are often used to balance and fill against that light rather than create it from nothing. Indoors, the honey-coloured globigerina limestone interiors of heritage sites such as Fort Ricasoli. This has stood in for ancient Rome and King's Landing. The Knights' palaces of the Three Cities are deep, stone-walled spaces where powerful HMIs and warm tungsten Fresnels build the entire look.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Malta Film Studios in Kalkara, founded in 1964 and home to among the world's largest filming water tanks, gives controlled stage conditions. Heat, sea salt and limestone dust make fixture protection routine, and on heritage sites lighting placement is set up with Heritage Malta. English is an official language alongside Maltese, keeping gaffer briefings and electrical forms clear for visiting crews.
