Color Grading

Here is how this works in practice. We set up grading for shoots working in Malta, connecting projects with colourists who shape the creative look that carries tone and emotion through a finished film. Malta's domestic grading capacity is modest, so we are honest about scope: local suites and remote grading sessions serve commercials, documentaries and many broadcast deliverables well, while large theatrical features with demanding HDR finishing are mostly graded at set up facilities overseas.

Here is the short of it. Our team watches the workflow either way, managing conform handover, look references and review scheduling, and we run secure colour-accurate streamed sessions so directors, cinematographers and watching colourists can approve the grade without travelling. We work across pro RAW and log formats and handle HDR and SDR deliverables with their respective trim passes. For Maltese shoots and co-productions finishing locally, we keep the grade rooted in the cinematographer's intent and the natural quality of the island's light. Across, we document clearly which stages happen on the island and which route to a partner site, so the look development and finishing schedule holds firm from picture lock to delivery.

Here is the breakdown. Malta gives a colourist a great canvas. The honey-coloured globigerina limestone of UNESCO-listed Valletta and the forts of the Grand Harbour glow warmly under roughly 300 days of sunshine a year, while the green sister island of Gozo, Comino's Blue Lagoon and the Blue Grotto give cooler, more saturated palettes. Ridley Scott returned repeatedly for Gladiator, Gladiator II and Napoleon, and Fort Ricasoli has played ancient Rome and King's Landing's Red Keep, all looks that lean on the islands' warm stone and clear Mediterranean light.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Home-grown features such as the Sundance-winning Luzzu show a more naturalistic Maltese palette built on sea, sky and weathered colour. The archipelago packs 7,000 years of history and three UNESCO World Heritage sites into a compact space, giving grades plenty of texture to draw on. With English an official language and the Malta Film Commission setting up permits and the up to 40% cash rebates, producers can plan a grade that respects both Maltese craft and overseas finishing partners with confidence.
